Originally from Oxford, England, Alison Chadwick-Lim graduated from North Oxfordshire College of Art and Design in 1992, before attending Bachelor of Arts in Textiles and Surface Decoration for a year at Brunel University, England.
After relocating to Singapore in 1999
with her husband, Alison’s first impression of Batik was formed by the beautiful Nyonya Kebayas worn by the Peranakans in Malaysia and Singapore. This rekindled her passion in art and inspired her to explore traditional Batik styles. Her first mentors were Imelda and Said Sarkasi, from the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore. With guidance from the batik masters of the Kompleks Kraft, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali, Indonesia, Alison developed her own unique style of Batik paintings.
Having painted numerous commissions for private collectors, her most noted piece, entitled ‘Dragonfly resting’, was bought by Ms Grace Fu, currently the Senior Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts and Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in Singapore, who presented the batik painting on silk to the Director of Al-Khair Mosque, Singapore, in June 2010.
Alison was also commissioned for a silk batik painting by the LES group in Singapore for the newly opened Alkaff mansion, on Telok Blangah Hill.
Her latest series of artwork expresses the movement of the Sea Grass in the calming ocean, engaging beautifully vivid, harmonious colours and enchanting light. Merging traditional methods with contemporary concepts on hand painted silk.
Alison is currently working in her studio at Jalan Bahar Clay Studio, located at Dragon Kiln Village, Singapore.
