Johnny¡¯s
career as a potter began soon after he took a job as a kiln stoker
at Ceramic Brickworks in 1983. He became fascinated with clay and
started carving discarded bricks that were not suitable for firing.
When a pottery studio was started at the Brickworks he became part
of the group of potters. After he left Ceramic Brickworks he joined
the pottery programme at Outram Park Community Center and followed
when it was moved to Tanjong Pagar Community Club.
Johnny prefers handbuilding to throwing as he finds handbuilding
more interesting as it offers greater possibilities in form. He
especially enjoys fingering. His current work combines slabwork
and fingering to create representations of nature. He finds matte
glazes more suitable for his sculptural works. He also enjoys creating
animation characters where the challenge is to bring two-dimensional
drawings to three-dimensional life.
