Hoi
Seong¡¯s first touch of clay happened during his 3-Dimensional Design
Course in 1976 at Baharuddin Vocational Institution where he graduated
in 1978. His addiction to clay did not, however, begin until he
started to conduct pottery classes and formed the pottery studio
in Outram Park Community Centre in 1989.
In his early days, his work consisted of very fundamental designs
such as vases and slab work. He changed his work towards the
themes of teapots, and natural forms when their pottery studio moved
to the Tanjong Pagar Community Club. He has also experimented with
local clays for his unglazed works, which was inspired by ancient
pottery. He loves to go around construction sites to collect local
clay when there are excavations taking place.
He started learning about wood and salt firing at the Dragon Kiln
at Jalan Bahar Clay Studios. He hopes to build a small wood fire
kiln with his group members in the near future.
