Suriani first started taking pottery classes in 2001 at the Centre
for the Arts, National University of Singapore (NUS) under the tutorship
of Iskandar Jalil. It was the beginning of a lot of fun, excitement,
challenge and above all, the evolvement of a new passion.
She enjoys transforming a lump of clay into various forms whether
on the wheel or by handbuilding. But what she takes most pleasure
in is coiling sculptural or functional pieces. It¡¯s meditative.
She likes working with coarse stoneware clay. They give the texture
to the organic forms she creates. To add even more texture to the
clay surfaces slips made from local clay are either smeared or splattered.
For Suriani, it is important to always follow her intuition and
be spontaneous when doing her work.
Suriani exhibited her pottery pieces first in 2003 together
with Iskandar Jalil and his students in ¡°Ceramitivity ¨C The Second
Statement¡± organised by the Centre for the Arts, NUS and in 2004
in ¡°Discovery Phase¡± at ART2 Gallery. In 2005 she participated in
¡°Ceramitivity ¨C The Third Statement¡± as well as in the Second Ngee
Ann 3D Art Exhibition. She began teaching pottery in 2005.
Professionally, Suriani is trained in social anthropology and
lectures at the Department of Malay Studies, National University
of Singapore.
