Suriani first started taking pottery classes in 2001 at the Centre for the Arts, National University of Singapore (NUS) under the tutorship of Iskandar Jalil. It was the beginning of a lot of fun, excitement and above all, the evolvement of a new passion.
She mainly works with stoneware fired to 1290°C at reduction. To add texture to the clay surfaces slips made from local clay are either smeared or splattered. She uses recipe wood ash and magnesium matt glazes for her works.
Suriani has participated in group exhibitions including “Discovery Phase” (ART2 Gallery, 2003), “Starting with Clay …” (ART2 Gallery, 2006), “Pots, Pipes and other Pieces” (National Library in conjunction with the Singapore Art Show, 2007), “Inspirations from Kampung Gelam (Malay Heritage Centre, 2008).
She has done commissioned works for Temasek Holdings (2003), The Sentosa Resort and Spa (2006), National Heritage Board, Patron of the Year Award (2007) and Singapore International Foundation (2009).
Her works are displayed at the ART2 Gallery, MICA Building, Singapore.
